ITS LONG OVERDUE

The Governance body of Sailing –World Sailing, inspired by the windsurf community has now the opportunity for a big step forward in uniting all the windsurfers of the world and to increase public interest in sailing.

Windsurfing Today

is now foiling in 6 knots and in formats such as slalom showcasing sailing in a short, dynamic-sensational, easy to understand, media friendly to televise and to sell format.

  • equipment is
    – affordable
    – light weight
    – Easy to transport
    – Follows the World Sailing Production board scheme with all its advantages

The Goal:
is to have a “Unique feel and look” compared to other existing formats in comparison with other sailing medals. ( example off the beach – elimination system and/or slalom racing ).

IT IS TIME TO INVOLVE EVERYBODY AND DEFINE THE FUTURE OF OLYMPIC WINDSURFING

Olympic Windsurfing 2024:
Here are some details of the process already being set in motion.
(first step) The World Sailing 2024 Events & Equipment Working party has to propose a new format for windsurfing in 2024 based on submission 22 by November 2018. The World Sailing Council will have to agree on the World Sailing Working Party proposals format for the 2020 format for Olympic Windsurfing.

Windsurfer Men and Windsurfer Women New Equipment:
(second step) Trough equipment trials, before November 2019 – the equipment committee will have to find new equipment which would fit in the format decided in step 1.  The trial organizers will have to worry about anti-trust (monopolies are probably out). A possibility is the currently used  World Sailing Production board scheme by IFCA, FW, Raceboard, Formula Kite

Windsurfing Funboard

  • IFCA, The international Funboard Class Association has been recognized by IYRU/ISAF/WS since 1987 which is 31 years by now.
    • managed several disciplines such as slalom, speed, freestyle and wave
    • using a WS production board registration system to ensure that
      • the equipment used by our world champions is
        • exactly the same as what you can buy in a shop all over the world
        • affordable
        • same equipment used by sponsored windsurfers
  • Formula & Raceboard classes are also using the same production board registration scheme

Olympic Windsurfing

  • introduced in 1984 in LA California for men, 1992 in Barcelona for women

Olympic Windsurfing Facts:

    1. Windglider made it to 1 Olympic Cycle, 1984
    2. Lechner made it to 2 Olympic Cycles, 1988 and 1992
    3. Mistral One Design made it to 3 Olympic Cycles, 1996, 2000 and 2004
    4. RS:X made it to 4 Olympic Cycles, 2008, 2012, 2016 and 2020
      • sailed on One design/one manufacturer equipment
      • The 2024 windsurf equipment should have a format based on the production board system that survives the eternity…that evolves with our sport.
      • The day-to-day windsurfer has never identified himself with the alien/ outdated equipment used by the “board sailors” in the Olympics
      • Stephan van den Bergh, Bruce and Barbara Kendal, Lai Shan Lee, Allesandra Sensini, Nick Dempsey and Dorian Van Rijselberghe, made a name as an Olympian but were never seen nor recognized by the day-to-day windsurfer as the best windsurfers of those times.
      • Robby Naish, Bjorn and Britt Dunkerbeck, Gollito Estredo, Philip Koster, Antoine Albeau, and many other professional windsurfers never transferred to the Olympic circuit. The only 2 that ever bridged the gap were
        • Finian Maynard, who broke the World Outright speed record 500m
        • Sarah Quitta Offringha, who was nominated twice for the sailor of the year award. Not being an Olympian prevented this ambassador for our sport to win the awards.

WITH THE NEW SUBMISSIONS ON THE TABLE WE FINALLY HAVE THE CHANCE TO SEE THE 2 WORLDS MERGE AND SEE THE HEROES OF THE PROFESSIONAL CIRCUIT AND THE HEROES OF THE OLYMPIAN CIRCUIT MEET ON THE WATER.

World Sailing must absolutely elect.

  • A new evolutionary format
  • and adapted equipment
