JACOPO TESTA & SARAH QUITA OFFRINGA EUROPEAN FREESTYLE CHAMPIONS

On the fourth and last day of the DAM-X Event the winds were not in the competitors’ favor. The double elimination of the European Freestyle Pro Tour could not be finished, the organizers called the finals off at 3 p.m. and put up a tow-in session for the riders.

Slogging slalom amateurs could finish the DAM-X Fun Race and step up the podium later for the prize giving, whereas the pros remained dry all day.

A CIRCUS OF THE EXTRAORDINARY

2017damx-backy5

In low but teasingly gusty winds on day 3 of the DAM-X Event the European Freestyle Pro Tour tried to continue the double elimination of the women with German Johanna Rümenapp and Slovenian Lina Erzen. The long heat was canceled in the end, leaving high hopes for better conditions on the last day of the event to finish the EFPT finals here in Brouwersdam.

However, that didn’t stop DAM-X from delivering lots of action for all windsurfers and visitors.

Despite the low wind, we saw 160 windsurfers from seven different countries skimming the water in this year’s slalom Fun Race. Divided into a pro group of 25 and an amateur group of 135 riders, one and a half rounds could be finished in the race that will continue on Sunday.

In the afternoon an incredible freestyle tow-in followed up a competition in Austria earlier this year. Ten riders were towed towards the beach to perform in front of the cheering crowds for the 1.000 Euro price money that was up for grabs. The French guys Julien Mas and Sam Esteve added even more fun to the show by wearing full moose and dog body costumes, which however did not get them a place on the podium. Vice world champ Amado Vrieswijk claimed victory over Francesco Cappuzzo in second and Yentel Caers in third place.

It was a day packed with fun activities for everybody, from flyboarding and water zorbing to SUP Polo and a massive water slide here in Brouwersdam.

Later in the evening the restaurant of the Zeil- en Surfcentrum was transformed into a pumping club, hosting the legendary Saturday night DAM-X party. Let’s see how many party people will be walking around with sunglasses all day on Sunday, the last day of the event.

FRRRIDAY NIGHT RELOADED!

2017damx-backy4

Day 2 at the DAM-X Event

The second day at the Dam-X Event in Brouwersdam started a bit mellower with the wind slowly picking up in the morning, launching the double elimination of the European Freestyle Pro Tour for both men and women.

Local Davy Scheffers could fight his way up to face Sam Esteve from France next, leaving them a chance to climb on the podium. In the women’s double elimination, German Johanna Rümenapp and Lina Erzen from Slovenia will be facing each other next. Due to decreasing wind, the elimination has to be continued during the weekend, leaving six men and six women in the game.

The day went on with Jordy Vonk and Andrea Cucchi giving a clinic to prepare participants for the upcoming Furnace on Saturday, while the board sports & food market kicked off in the afternoon with the latest windsurf gear, fashion accessories, delicious snacks and drinks and other fun things to try out.

The freestyle pros pulled off an action packed tow-in session during sunset, followed by the opening of the popular Friday Night Event. Surrounded by live music, a DJ, little fire pits, food and drinks, DAM-X had prepared a spectacularly lit up night show with tow-in and flyboarding on the water and a gymnastics dance show on the dam, raising money for a local seal shelter.

RISING STAR: STERRE MEIJER AT THE DAMX

2017damx-backy55

The name says it all – Sterre is Dutch for “stars“ and we’re sure that we will see a lot more of this little starlet in the freestyle future. The 12 year-old local entered her first competition here in the European Freestyle Pro Tour Finals at the DAM-X event in Brouwersdam. Living only seven minutes away she can call one of the best windsurf spots in Europe her home spot.

1

I train every day after school when there is wind, but even when there’s no wind I train heli tacks and low wind tricks.”

How is your first competition experience so far?

First I was very excited because I never did it before and when I go upwind I never know whether I’ll be on time but it is really nice and all the girls help you and are very nice to you. I won the first heat and the second I lost to Arianne Aukes, that was very funny because she is super good and made third place!”

Why did you decide to register for this event?

Because I want to know how it goes and get more experience in competition so that when I’m older and want to go again I know how everything works.”

What would you tell other young girls that are still hesitating to compete?

Don’t be scared because it’s good! You know that you’re not gonna win, maybe some day but you’re not gonna be first if you’ve never done this before. It’s very much English but if you don’t understand something the other girls will help you with your English. Oh and don’t be too excited because then things can go very wrong haha!”

What do you think about this event so far, how was the registration, organization etc.?

It’s very good organized because when you don’t know something, they say it like 20 times or something, so it’s very hard to miss things and if you don’t understand something or don’t know when the skippers’ meeting is, you can always ask someone, the other girls and everyone will tell you, everyone is very helpful.”

Do you think we’re going to see you here again next year?

Yeah sure, it’s very nice so I think yes!“

Good luck for your upcoming heats Sterre, we’ll be cheering for you at the beach!
